Three Stars: Farmer, Webb, Morrow earn honours

EDMONTON – Women's basketball student-athlete Mackenzie Farmer is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after leading the Griffins to a solid weekend split against cross-town rival Alberta.

Farmer was one of four Griffins in double digits for points on Friday as they upset the nationally-ranked Alberta Pandas 85-74 and followed that up by leading the Griffins with 17 points in Saturday's loss.

Men's hockey forward Zach Webb and men's volleyball outside hitter Jefferson Morrow have been named second and third stars, respectively.

This is Farmer's third appearance of the season on the Three Stars list after she was previously named first star on Feb. 1 and second star Dec. 7.

Both Webb and Morrow make the list for the second time this season. Webb was previously third star on Feb. 1 and Morrow was first star on Jan. 25.

The Griffins' leading scorer recorded 32 points combined in a two-game weekend series at Alberta on the weekend.

In Friday's historic 85-74 win over the Pandas – the first time the Griffins have beaten them since joining Canada West in 2014 – Farmer scored 15 points, adding six rebounds and an assist in 36 minutes on the court.

She also played 36 minutes on Saturday and was by far the Griffins' most effective player in a tough 73-42 loss, scoring a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and an assist.

For the season, Farmer leads the Griffins in points/game (15.2, 15th in Canada West) and is tied for the team lead in rebounds/game (5.5).

Farmer leads the Griffins into their final home action of the regular season this weekend when they host Mount Royal University on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m., both David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).

2nd STAR: Zach Webb, F, men's hockey

The second-year forward continues to impress down the stretch for the Griffins, moving into the team scoring lead with a three-point game against cross-town rival Alberta on Saturday.

Webb scored twice and an added an assist as the Griffins pushed the U SPORTS No.  2 in a game that was tied 4-4 until late before ending up 7-4 in favour of the Golden Bears. He also finished the game +2 and with two shots.

Webb tipped Cameron Reagan's point shot late in the first and Chase Thudium found the puck in a scramble to tie the game 2-2.

Then in the second period, with the Griffins trailing 4-2, Webb scored two in a row to tie it, whacking in rebounds at 16:36 and 19:30.

For the season, Webb leads the Griffins in scoring with four goals and 12 points in 17 games.

MacEwan heads into its final contest of the 2021-22 season on Saturday at Alberta (7 p.m., Clare Drake Arena, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).

3rd STAR: Jefferson Morrow, OH, men's volleyball

The Aussie outside hitter led the Griffins in a tough two-game series against the nationally-ranked Alberta Golden Bears with 15 kills in seven sets over the weekend.

In Friday's 3-1 loss – the first time MacEwan has taken a set off Alberta since 2018 – his nine kills led the way for the Griffins, while he accounted for 10.5 points, adding two digs and two blocks.

In Saturday's 3-0 loss, Morrow was again MacEwan's kills leader with six, adding two digs and accounting for 6.0 points.

For the season, Morrow is second on the Griffins in kills (112) and service aces (6), while leading the team with 73 digs.

Morrow will lead the Griffins into weekend action at Mount Royal University on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m., both Canada West TV presented by Co-op).
