EDMONTON – The leading rebounder for Team Alberta's silver medal-winning men's basketball squad 2017 Canada Summer Games will be joining the MacEwan University Griffins for the 2018-19 season.

Sherwood Park's Alex Jap can't wait to get his journey started with the Griffins.

"It's very exciting. It's a great opportunity," said the 6-foot-6 centre/power forward. "I'm looking forward to working with Eric (Magdanz) and all the coaching staff here. I think what they're doing is great."

A former Junior Griffins basketball player, Jap has long been on MacEwan's radar.

"Alex has been a player who we have been interested in for a long time," said Griffins head coach Magdanz. "We have had the opportunity to watch and assist him in growing as an athlete. We believe he is only scratching the surface of his ability and are excited to have the chance to continue working with him for his university career.

"With the size and skill-set that Alex is bringing as a high school athlete to our team, we feel he can make an impact quickly within our team."

Jap, out of Sherwood Park's Bev Facey, notes his parents and brother also play basketball and he's been shooting hoops for as long as he can remember. It's a perfect fit for him to further his career at MacEwan starting next season.

"I love what they're doing out here," he said. "It's very exciting."
