Schildroth takes over as interim men's basketball head coach after coaching change

EDMONTON – A change has been made to the coaching staff of the MacEwan Griffins men's basketball team.

MacEwan Director of Athletics Ken Schildroth informed the team and staff on Monday that he will be stepping behind the bench as the Griffins' interim head coach until a new coach is hired.

The search for a new coach begins immediately and the career opportunity will appear soon under the careers section on the MacEwan University website.

Schildroth brings a wealth of experience from the high school, club, provincial and university basketball coaching levels.

"Any time a change is required, it's never an easy decision for the student athletes, coaching staff, the Athletics department or the university," said Schildroth. "As we move forward, the focus is on supporting the student athletes through the transition to a new coach."

The Griffins men's basketball team is currently tied for last in Canada West with an 0-12 record. Since joining the conference in 2014, MacEwan's men's basketball program has a combined 29-63 regular season record and 1-2 playoff mark.

Eight games remain in the 2018-19 regular season, including a pair of home dates versus Calgary on Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m., both in David Atkinson Gym).

Following this weekend's slate of games, the Griffins have remaining regular season contests against UBC-Okanagan (Jan. 18-19 in Kelowna, B.C.), Brandon (Jan. 25-26 at home) and at Victoria (Feb. 1-2).
