Bill Mucklow

(Inducted April 2003)

If there is such a thing as a natural athlete, certainly Bill is one, as he excelled in any and every athletic pursuit.

Bill began his post-secondary studies at the University of Calgary, where he was the point guard on the men’s basketball team and corner linebacker and place kicker on the football team.

After graduation, Bill went on to teach in the school system in both Quebec and Ontario. While in Ontario, coaching the school’s golf team, he helped move two athletes on to U.S. golf teams at Ohio State and Maryland University.

Bill joined MacEwan in 1975 and was asked to lead both intercollegiate athletics and to develop a physical education program for the institution.

Bill coached the women’s basketball team for a couple of seasons and coached the golf team on and off for several years.

Bill continued his academic studies while at MacEwan with a Masters of Science in Physical Education at the University of Oregon and a Ph.D in Community College Education through Oregon State University.

Bill was instrumental in improving the academic integrity of the Griffins teams during his five years as Athletic Director and was active in discussions for the creation of the provincial Jimmie Condon Scholarships.

Bill led the college from elective physical activity classes for general students to university transfer physical education courses and ultimately to MacEwan’s own physical education transfer program. Similarly, Bill was instrumental in growth of the university transfer programming in the Sciences.

Dr. Mucklow was a recipient of the highest college employee honour with the MacEwan Medallion, for his many years of valuable service and contribution to the college’s success.

Bill continued to provide service to the institution by leading the efforts of recruiting international students until his retirement.

For his efforts and contribution to the growth and development of MacEwan Athletics, it is with pride and honour Bill Mucklow is inducted to the Griffins’ Wall of Distinction.
