Cowan's support for Griffins Athletics crucial in championing student-centered philosophy

Bob Cowan

Bob Cowan joined MacEwan in 1974 as a student counsellor, advising and counselling current and prospective students. He was appointed the section head for the counselling department in 1981 and over the next several years led the development of a student orientation program and expanded services for students with disabilities.

Bob was well known as champion for student-centered philosophy as a core value for the college.

In 1984, he was appointed Director of Student Services that included responsibility for Athletics and Recreation, Counselling, College Services and to the Registrar’s Office. As Director, he guided the development of a wellness program for students and staff, and initiated an academic monitoring program for student athletes, among other accomplishments.

Bob was a strong supporter of Griffins athletes, often seen at contests, while being quick to lend support of guidance when an athlete sought his advice.

In 1992, Bob was appointed Vice President of Student Services and continued to champion the needs of students with the college’s Executive Committee and Board of Governors.

Bob helped to develop the strategic model for the MacEwan Centre for Sport and Wellness in its operational and structural design that has proven to be an award-winning success, serving the needs of students, staff and the Edmonton public.

Bob Cowan left a lasting impression on the college culture with a fundamental value of putting student needs and wants paramount in college policies, services and decision-making.

Bob left MacEwan in 1996 to pursue other interests in gaming that proved very successful in providing opportunities to support the activities of non-profit societies.

For his efforts and contribution to the growth and development of Griffins Athletics, it is with pride and honour Bob Cowan is inducted to the Griffins’ Wall of Distinction.
