Darren Ross

(Inducted April 2000)

Darren Ross represented the Griffins basketball program as a player during the 1987-88, 88-89 and 92-93 seasons. He also served as an assistant coach (93-95) and took over head coaching responsibilities from 1995-97.

As MacEwan’s head coach, Darren posted a 34-6 record, which included two ACAC North Conference championships. As an assistant coach, he helped MacEwan win a CCAA bronze medal.

After his playing career ended, Darren established MacEwan’s then ACAC career points record with 1350 points. He won the ACAC scoring title in 1990-91 (23.9 points per game) and in 92-93 (23.6 ppg), among the best marks in program history.

Other personal accomplishments include: four-time ACAC all-star (87-88, 88-89, 90-91, 92-93), two-time CCAA All-Canadian (1992-93, 90-91).

The Griffins also recognized his achievements, naming him men’s basketball MVP three times (88-89, 90-91 and 92-93). He was also selected as the player who contributed the most to the men’s basketball program during the 1987-88 and 88-89 seasons). MacEwan also named him as the Griffins Outstanding Athlete Contribution award winner three times (88-89, 90-91 and 92-93) and awarded him as Male Athlete of the Year three times (88-89, 90-91, 92-93).

Darren helped lead the men’s basketball team to two conference championships and two silver-medal seasons. The Griffins won a bronze medal at the CCAA nationals during his playing days.

It is very fitting and deserving that Darren Ross became the first male athlete inducted into the Griffins’ Wall of Distinction.
