Sandman Player of the Month: Farmer's playoff performance carries Griffins

MacEwan Athletics

EDMONTON – Women's basketball forward Mackenzie Farmer has been named the Sandman Signature Player of the Month for the month of March.

Farmer wins a free night's stay at the Sandman Signature Hotel downtown.

She earns the honour for her performance in a pair of March playoff games as the Griffins returned to the Canada West playoffs for the first time in five years.

Farmer put the Griffins on her back on March 4 in Calgary with 26 points as the No. 14-seeded Griffins knocked off No. 13 UBC-Okanagan 69-63 for their first Canada West playoff win since 2016.

She also added eight rebounds, five steals and a block in a head-turning performance. Farmer's offensive output that night is the third-most by a Griffins player in a single game since the program joined Canada West in 2014.

"Mac really stepped up in the second half and kind of carried us through it, which was outstanding and what we've come to love and expect from her," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "Her effort was outstanding and we needed that performance to put us over the edge."

Adding to her March performance, Farmer scored 12 points in MacEwan's second game of that playoff weekend against No. 4 Trinity Western on March 5, adding five rebounds, two blocks and a steal in a 77-71 loss.
