EDMONTON – Resiliency has been a defining characteristic of several recent players in the MacEwan women's basketball program who have battled through injuries and returned to the top of their game.
Head coach Katherine Adams' latest recruit Ava Regier has similar resolve as she works to recover from ACL reconstruction surgery before getting back up to form with the Griffins for the 2022-23 Canada West season.
"That's one of the things that has impressed me most about her is the resiliency in not letting this incredibly challenging and frustrating (situation) prevent her from succeeding," said Adams. "There are so many excuses and reasons to let it stop you and I think it's actually motivated her further to really pursue this opportunity and come back healthier and stronger than she was before. Her diligence and character she's shown through this process has really stood out.
"It's something we've seen from some of our other players who've gone through injuries, as well. She's demonstrated she's going to be a great fit with our program."
The 5-foot-11 Airdrie, Alta. native out of George McDougall high school brings versatility on the court, able to play anywhere in the guard and forward position groups. Adams liked what she saw from Regier during summer and fall seasons in Calgary before the injury put her on the sidelines for her Grade 12 high school campaign.
"It's one of the things we really like about her is her versatility," said Adams. "She has a skill set where she can play and defend inside if she needs to. She shoots the ball well enough that she can play outside and has the ability to play on the perimeter."
Guard may end up being her best position with the Griffins, but Adams will have options with Regier's ability to do multiple things on the court.
"She's a utility player that we can put in different positions and she can defend multiple positions," said Adams. "She can attack offensively from inside and outside.
"Great character kid and we're really excited to add her to the mix. I think she brings a lot to the table and is going to be a great fit."
