EDMONTON – After averaging 18.2 points/game in the month of February, women's basketball forward Unity Obasuyi has been named the Sandman Player of the Month across all sports at MacEwan.

The second-year forward earns a free night's stay at the Sandman Signature Downtown Edmonton hotel.

In five February games, Obasuyi recorded 91 points and was not only the Griffins' scoring leader in all of them, she also scored the most of anyone on either team in three of the five contests.

"She flat out knows how to score the basketball," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "She can score in a lot of different ways and she's still a second year. It's just that experience of figuring out what works, how to get the shots that she wants and being able to capitalize and finish on them.

"She's still learning and growing. I think the more games we play and the more she competes, the more she's figuring that out."

Obasuyi's shining moment was a 23-point effort on Feb. 8 against Manitoba that led the Griffins to their first win of the season, a 66-62 triumph over the Bisons.

She also scored 18 points against Saskatchewan Feb. 1, had 20 vs. Manitoba on Feb. 7, and finished the season with 19 and 11, respectively, against Alberta Feb. 14-15.

In addition to her points production in February, Obasuyi also had 24 rebounds, 10 steals and five blocks in the Griffins' final five games of the season.

"I think for the entirety of the year, she really elevated her game and provided a spark for us in scoring," said Adams. "I think one of the most impressive things is you know she's at the top of teams' scouting reports and she was still able to perform and produce the same level of scoring night in and night out."

After the season concluded, Obasuyi finished eighth in Canada West with a 15.7 points/game average, which is the fifth-best in program history.

Additionally, she shattered the program record for the greatest percentage of the team's total offensive production, scoring 31.54% of the Griffins' total points in 2024-25.

"She completely earns it because she spends so much time in the gym working on her game that it's so nice to see her reap the rewards of all the work she's put in," said Adams.
