EDMONTON – The goals just kept coming in a thoroughly dominant effort from the defending ACAC women's hockey champions on Friday night at the Downtown Community Arena.
The MacEwan Griffins scored four times in the second period, en route to a 7-0 win over the visiting SAIT Trojans in a lopsided rematch of the 2017 ACAC championship final.
"It was really nice because we got goal-scoring from a lot of people," said head coach Lindsay McAlpine. "We had lots of depth on our scoring today, which is a huge positive for us."
No less than eight Griffins had multi-point efforts. Jill MacWilliam, Jordyn Reimer, Dominique Scheurer, Beth Taylor, Tessa Mitchell and Shyla Jans all produced a goal and an assist, while Jaime Erickson and Carley Jewell had two assists each.
"We just capitalized on the opportunities that we created. We did put a lot of pucks on the net," said McAlpine, whose team outshot the Trojans 43-25 in the contest.
Amanda Murray also scored and captain Sydney Thomlison had an assist for the Griffins (6-0-1), who remain undefeated in regulation and atop the ACAC standings.
Goaltender Sandy Heim, meanwhile, made 25 saves for the shutout – the third goose-egg for the Griffins in their past four games (the other two by rookie Natalie Bender, who was backing up Heim on Friday).
"Sandy played great tonight," said McAlpine. "They did get a couple of really good chances near the end of the game and she had to make some really big saves to keep her shutout alive. She was kind of back to her old form tonight."
MacEwan travels to Calgary for the rematch with SAIT (1-5-1) on Saturday (7 p.m., SAIT Arena).
