EDMONTON – The MacEwan Griffins are pleased to announce the hiring of James Penny to fill the newly-created role as Athletics Equipment and Events Co-ordinator, Director of Athletics Ken Schildroth announced Wednesday.

Penny has worked as a customer service representative with MacEwan University's Sport and Wellness welcome desk for the past 10 years and brings a relevant skill-set to the new position with the MacEwan Athletics department.

"James brings an outstanding commitment to MacEwan University, a fabulous track record supporting a wide spectrum of sporting and special events, and an understanding of ticket sales, inventory and financial reporting," said Schildroth. "His tremendous attention to detail, a robust work ethic and an aptitude for lifelong learning are key attributes that will help him be successful in the position."

Penny's duties on the welcome desk included advanced administration, maintaining cash floats, assisting with equipment set-up and take-down, laundering towels and athlete uniforms, conducting security walk-throughs and completing opening and closing procedures in the Christenson Centre for Sport and Wellness.

His new role will feature many familiar tasks, including supporting the co-ordination and planning of Griffins Game Day events, equipment tracking, maintaining inventories and supporting operational activities such as event streaming.

Penny, who holds a diploma in Accounting and Strategic Measurement from MacEwan, brings a strong technical aptitude to the position and feels he'll be an asset in fulfilling an important role within the department.

"I am looking forward to stepping out from the backstage and taking on a more active supporting role in MacEwan Athletics," said Penny. "As a graduate from MacEwan, it fills me with no small sense of pride to have seen and been a small part of the growth our Athletics Department has been experienced within the last few years. To now be part of the team that made all these changes possible is both a great opportunity and a privilege."

Penny will start in his new role with the MacEwan Athletics department on Sept. 30.
