Three Stars: Schmidt, Schubert, Farmer earn honours

EDMONTON – Men's hockey student-athlete Colin Schmidt is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after a six-point performance in leading the Griffins to a weekend sweep of cross-town rival Concordia.

Schmidt scored four goals in the Griffins' 9-1 win over the Thunder on Friday before potting a goal and an assist in their 5-2 victory on Saturday.

Other athletes recognized this week include second star Kylie Schubert of the women's volleyball team and third star Mackenzie Farmer of the women's basketball team.

It's the first time this season that Schmidt has been honoured on the three stars list. Schubert appears for the second time after being named first star on Jan. 8 and Farmer makes the list for the third after earning first star honours on Nov. 5 and third star recognition on Jan. 7.

In just his second weekend of action after gaining eligibility for the MacEwan Griffins in the second-half of the season, Schmidt was an unstoppable offensive force, producing five goals and an assist in a pair of wins over cross-town rival Concordia.

Schmidt scored four times in Friday's 9-1 win. After opening the scoring in the first period, the Spruce Grove product struck for three in the third, including his hat-trick goal for MacEwan's seventh of the contest with 5:32 remaining.

In Saturday's rematch, Schmidt was buzzing again, drawing an assist on the opening goal of the game and scoring the Griffins' fourth.

The former Melfort Mustangs star now has seven points in four games for the Griffins this season.

He'll lead MacEwan into action against UAlberta-Augustana on Friday (7:30 p.m. in Camrose) and Saturday (6 p.m., Downtown Community Arena).

2nd STAR: Kylie Schubert, S, women's volleyball

Proving her versatility, Schubert not only set up the Griffins' attack with 70 combined assists in seven sets against cross-town rival Alberta over the weekend, she added 30 digs – proving to be a major reason behind the team's strong defensive performance.

Most of those came against Pandas outside hitter Kory White, who is one of the most dynamic players in Canada West.

In Friday's 3-1 win over their Edmonton rivals, Schubert set a solid attack with 45 assists, while producing 16 digs, two service aces and a block.

In Saturday's 3-0 loss, she had 25 assists, a service ace and 14 digs.

For the season, Schubert leads the conference in assists (572) and is third in assists per set (9.38).

She leads MacEwan into road action at Winnipeg on Friday (5 p.m. MT) and Saturday (5:45 p.m. MT, both games Canada West TV presented by Co-op).

3rd STAR: Mackenzie Farmer, F, women's basketball

The Canada West steals leader continued to wreak havoc, recording 11 combined steals in a pair of losses for the Griffins against cross-town rival Alberta over the weekend.

In Thursday's 74-55 defeat, Farmer led the Griffins with 13 points, while recording seven steals.

It's the fourth time this season, that Farmer has produced seven steals in a game – all of them tying Kelly O'Hallahan's seven-steal effort against UNBC on Jan. 9, 2015 for the second-best single game mark in the program's Canada West history.

In Saturday's 85-46 loss, Farmer led the Griffins with 11 points, while adding four steals and three blocks.

Famer now has 50 steals on the season to top the conference, while her 16 blocks is fourth-best.

Farmer leads the Griffins into home action vs. UBC on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m., both David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).
