EDMONTON – Women's basketball student-athlete Shannon Majeau is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after leading the Griffins to a weekend split against Thompson Rivers University.

The fifth-year post player had back-to-back double doubles, producing a combined 35 points and 24 rebounds in the two contests.

Men's hockey forward Ethan Strang and men's volleyball setter Alexander Lyndon have been named the second and third stars, respectively.

All three student-athletes are being recognized for the first time in 2022-23.

1st STAR: Shannon Majeau, P, women's basketball

Spruce Grove, AB, fifth-year, Science

What a weekend it was for the veteran post player as Majeau produced back-to-back double doubles for the Griffins women's basketball team on their road trip to Kamloops, B.C.

The Spruce Grove native's signature performance came on Saturday as she led MacEwan to a 69-61 win over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack by producing 17 points and 14 rebounds, along with two blocks and two assists.

In Friday's 78-69 loss to TRU, Majeau had 18 points, 10 rebounds and a steal.

The 6-foot-1 Memorial Composite product now has three double doubles this season, which brings her career Canada West total to four.

For the season, she is third in scoring on the Griffins, averaging 10.8 points per game, and leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game.

Majeau and her teammates are enjoying the semester break before returning to action on Jan. 6 vs. Trinity Western (6 p.m., David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV).

2nd STAR: Ethan Strang, F, men's hockey

Cochrane, AB, first-year, Open Studies

Facing a tough test in a weekend home-and-home series against the nationally-ranked Alberta Golden Bears, Strang stepped up for the Griffins men's hockey team with three points.

In Friday's 4-1 loss at the Downtown Community Arena, he drew an assist on Elijah Brown's goal.

In Saturday's 11-2 defeat, the first-year forward scored both of his team's goals, matching the program's rookie Canada West single game record shared with Brecon Wood (Oct. 16, 2021), David Kope (Jan. 28, 2022) and Brendan Boyle (Oct. 1, 2022).

After the first semester, Strang is tied for fourth among MacEwan scorers with four goals and eight points in 12 games.

Currently on winter break, the Griffins men's hockey team returns to action on Jan. 6-7 with a home-and-home series against the Calgary Dinos. Saturday's contest is at home (5 p.m., Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV).

3rd STAR: Alexander Lyndon, S, men's volleyball

Sydney, AUS, third-year, Arts

Alexander Lyndon is currently fifth in Canada West in assists per set (Eduardo Perez photo).

Up against the No. 2-ranked team in the country, the Trinity Western Spartans, the Griffins needed a solid setting performance to compete, and they got one from the third-year Aussie.

Lyndon's play, setting up a balanced attack, gave the Griffins a chance as they pushed the Spartans, despite what the scores say.

In Friday's 3-0 loss, Lyndon had 22 assists and three digs.

In Saturday's 3-0 defeat, he had 24 assists and seven digs.

Lyndon is currently fifth in Canada West in assists/set (8.44), which, if extrapolated over a whole season, would be the second-best mark in the program's Canada West history, trailing only the 9.22 Matthew Mohler put up in 2015-16.

Lyndon and the Griffins will return to action in the new year, travelling to Manitoba on Jan. 6-7 (both Canada West TV).
