EDMONTON – Mark Aug. 25 on your calendar, MacEwan soccer fans.

That's when the 2023 Canada West season kicks off for both Griffins squads in a doubleheader at Clarke Stadium. The women host Regina (12 p.m.), followed by the men hosting Lethbridge (2:30 p.m.).

Both teams also play again at Clarke on Aug. 26, hosting Saskatchewan (12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.)

The home-opening weekend lifts the lid on a 14-game regular season slate for the Griffins soccer teams as they push for positions in the Canada West playoffs and beyond.

Two years ago, the Griffins women's soccer team captured the U SPORTS national championship and they'll again be among the favourites to advance out of Canada West to that tournament again.

Among their schedule highlights is a home-and-home series against cross-town rival Alberta Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and a road trip across B.C. with visits to UBC and UNBC on the same weekend Sept. 22-24.

"We are so excited for the 2023-24 season," said head coach Dean Cordeiro. "The team can't wait to get started. With the majority of last year's team returning and an exceptional incoming class, we are expecting great things."

The Griffins men's team is looking to return to the post-season after missing out on a heartbreaking tiebreaker to Saskatchewan for the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division in 2022.

The big road trip of the season for the men comes Sept. 22-24 when they visit Victoria and UFV.

"Our first recruiting cycle as a staff has come and is now gone," noted Griffins head coach Adam Loga, who has been at the helm of the program since 2016. "That group came to build us and make us relevant, and they did just that. We're looking forward to seeing where this next group can take us."
