EDMONTON – On the heels of being named Canada West women's soccer player of the week, Grace Mwasalla has earned the U SPORTS honour, too.

Mwasalla was named U SPORTS soccer athlete of the week alongside men's winner Ludovyck Ciociola of McGill on Wednesday.

Mwasalla scored three goals for the Griffins in two weekend wins – a 3-0 triumph over UNBC and a 1-0 blanking of Calgary. With the victories, the 4-2-0 Griffins moved up to No. 7 in the U SPORTS national rankings.

Against Calgary, Mwasalla netted the winner in the 72nd minute when she streaked through the middle, controlling a through ball from Hannah Supina and finishing inside the right post.

"She's so dangerous when we can find her in that advanced platform," said Griffins head coach Dean Cordeiro. "She found herself between both centre-backs, was able to get on the ball, just got it out of her feet and what a quality finish."

Mwasalla becomes the first Griffins women's soccer player to win U SPORTS women's soccer player of the week after the national body adopted a similar format to Canada West this season, honouring athletes by sport.

She's just the second student-athlete in MacEwan history to win a national weekly athlete of the week award, following women's volleyball setter Kylie Schubert, who was named U SPORTS female athlete of the week during the 2019-20 season.
