EDMONTON – Set to kick off their playoff quest against a provincial rival, the MacEwan basketball teams will welcome Mount Royal University for their home-opening weekend Nov. 3-4 at the David Atkinson Gym.

MacEwan's 20-game 2023-24 Canada West regular season schedule released Monday by the conference will also conclude at home with the Griffins hosting the Victoria Vikes Feb. 9-10.

New this season, all MacEwan home doubleheaders in the first semester will feature the women's game first, followed by the men's contest. In the second semester, all weekend events will proceed in the opposite order.

Other highlights of the Griffins' schedule include hosting UBC on Dec. 1-2 and visiting cross-town rival Alberta on Jan. 5-6 at the Saville Centre.

"With a young core returning and strong incoming recruiting class, this group is energized and excited for another competitive Canada West season," said Griffins women's head coach Katherine Adams. "We look forward to seeing some teams we haven't seen since the 2018-19 season and seeing the growth in this young group."

Although the schedule will be challenging, men's head coach Mike Connolly is looking forward to testing his young group against some of the best teams in U SPORTS, including Victoria, which finished fourth in the country last March.

"It's another tough Canada West schedule with opponents that include the powerhouses of the conference – U of A, UVic, UBC and final-eight contestant Winnipeg," said MacEwan head coach Mike Connolly. "There are no easy games this year in Canada West as all opponents are playoff teams.

"It will be a great test for the Griffins moving forward in their development."

The top 12 teams from the regular season will qualify for the conference's single-site championship format, hosted by UFV (women) and Manitoba (men) Feb. 21-25.
