Anika Buys, Women's Volleyball
Second Star of the Week for the week ending Jan.. 10, 2026
EDMONTON – Buys always seems to play well in her home province as she had a dominating performance in the middle for the Griffins during a weekend series at Winnipeg.
Buys finished with 17 kills and 16 blocks, accounting for 27.0 points in MacEwan’s split with the Wesmen.
In Friday’s 3-2 loss, Buys had nine kills on a .389 hitting percentage, adding nine blocks and accounting for 14.0 points. The nine blocks is a new career high for her and is tied for the seventh most by a Griffin in a Canada West match.
Her performance in Saturday’s 3-0 victory was maybe even more impressive because in just three sets Buys had eight kills on a .583 efficiency and seven blocks, accounting for 13.0 points.
Buys is now the Canada West leader in blocks with 63 and is second in blocks/set (1.29). She’s on pace for the second-best blocking season by a Griffin in Canada West behind only Dakota Wilson, who averaged 1.41 blocks/set in 2014-15.
Buys and the Griffins hit the road again this weekend, visiting UBC on Friday (6:30 p.m. MT) and Saturday (5 p.m. MT, both Canada West TV).
