Lana Nicoll (nee Common) – women’s volleyball

(Inducted April 2000)

Lana Nicoll was a major factor in Griffins Athletics during her stellar women’s volleyball career that spanned four seasons (1993-94, 94-95, 96-97 and 97-98).

She also served as an assistant coach for the Griffins in 1995-96 and was the team’s head coach in 1998-99.

During her athletic career as a Griffin, Lana won every award there was more than once. If there were any words that summarize Lana’s athletic career, it would be competitive, consistent and loyal.

Her personal accomplishments are as follows: ACAC All-Star (93-94, 94-95, 96-97, 97-98), ACAC Academic All-Conference (93-94, 94-95, 96-97, 97-98), CCAA Academic All Canadian (93-94, 94-95, 96-97, 97-98), CCAA nationals All-Tournament team (93-94, 94-95, 96-97, 97-98), and CCAA All-Canadian (94-95, 96-97, 97-98).

She was also named the Griffins women’s volleyball MVP four times, won the MacEwan Outstanding Athlete Contribution honour four times and was the Griffins’ Female Athlete of the Year three times.

Lana seemed to make everyone around her better as the women’s volleyball team attended the CCAA national championships in all four of her playing seasons. They won ACAC banners in 1996-97 and 1997-98.

Lana was instrumental in helping to establish the Griffins Volleyball Booster Club and served as president of that society in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. Her emotional and passionate support of Grant MacEwan College athlete program resulted in many leadership opportunities and challenges, but she embraced them with the same vigour she displayed on the volleyball court.

It is very fitting and deserving that Lana Nicoll (Common) was the first female athlete inducted into the Griffins’ Wall of Distinction.
