EDMONTON – As anticipation builds for the start of the MacEwan Griffins women's soccer training camp in just over six weeks (Aug. 7), head coach Dean Cordeiro has added a few more key pieces to a strong 2019 recruiting class.
Cordeiro announced Tuesday that forward Sunder West, goalkeeper Kiarrah Torrance and winger Marilyn Prieto will be joining the Griffins for the upcoming Canada West season.
West, a product of Raymond, Alta., has an intriguing resume – she was named MVP of the 2017 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship … for women's basketball.
That award came after the 5-foot-8 guard led the Lethbridge College Kodiaks to a national title on an undefeated 37-0 record, while also winning MVP of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs and her school's female athlete of the year honours.
Upon a transfer to MacEwan in 2019-20 – where she will be entering her fourth-year of university eligibility – West will be focusing on the soccer pitch, where her talent is equally evident. Currently, the striker is tearing up the Alberta Major Soccer League for Lethbridge FC, leading the golden boot standings with eight goals in seven games.
"Sunder is a great athlete who was always a top-level soccer player and has decided to finish off her athletic career playing soccer," said Cordeiro. "We're excited to bring a player who has a knack for scoring goals to our program for her final two years of eligibility."
Torrance comes to the Griffins from her hometown of Surrey, B.C., where she has excelled in the net for strong club team Fusion FC.
"Kiarrah led her team to all the way to the British Columbia Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) final where she was instrumental throughout their playoff run helping her team secure the silver medal," said Cordeiro. "Kiarrah is a gamer and is only scratching at the surface of her potential."
Prieto hails from La Habra, Calif., where she has been a standout for the La Miranda high school team and her club squad, Slammers FC. She played high school soccer with current Griffin Cassandra Loza and past Griffin Lauren Garcia.
"Marilyn is a fierce competitor with a tremendous work rate and has a strong ability to create opportunities in the attacking third," said Cordeiro.
MacEwan lifts the lid on the 2019 season by hosting Mount Royal University on Sept. 7 (12 p.m., Clareview Field).
