EDMONTON – Coming off a season where they scored 46 goals in 14 regular season games – tied for the most in Canada West – the Griffins women's soccer team is poised to be even more dangerous in 2023.

New recruit Bryn Mortensen, who has the ability to drive offence at an elite level, will bring another dimension to the Griffins' attack.

The Calgary Blizzard product has a lengthy resume of high-level experiences, including finishing as the leading scorer for Team Alberta at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

"Bryn has a really high soccer IQ," said MacEwan women's soccer head coach Dean Cordeiro. "The way she processes the game is elite. Her ability to score goals from distance and to create opportunities is something we're excited about."

At last year's Canada Summer Games, Mortensen scored three goals for Team Alberta – tied for third in tournament scoring. Also among her long list of accomplishments is winning her high school's (Calgary's Joane Cardinal-Schubert) athlete of the year and soccer team MVP honours, winning a First Touch Football MVP award and making the all-star team for the Premier Showcase.

"She's a very cerebral player who always seems to make the right play when she's on the ball," said Cordeiro.

Mortensen, who was also previously named a CTV News athlete of the week in her hometown, recently participated in a Canadian National Development Centre competition and futsal nationals. In 2022, she led the Blizzard SC05 team to a provincial title and a national bronze medal.

"She's an attack-minded player," said Cordeiro. "She plays in midfield, but she's very versatile and can play anywhere in the front three. We're so excited to bring her into the mix."

Mortensen was also a Team Alberta captain in 2018-19 and was a member of Canada REX (2019-21) and the Alberta Whitecaps Elite REX (2021-22) programs.
