EDMONTON – Siblings featured on the same team is a once in a while occurrence in U SPORTS.

But twins?

That's a rarity.

So, when the Piekema twin sisters, Alyssa and Addison, join the Griffins women's volleyball team in 2025-26, they'll be bringing a special bond and chemistry to the court.

After leading Lethbridge Collegiate Institute to the 4A provincial championship in 2024, they're set to bring their talents to the Griffins.

"They're both fantastic people and teammates, and very athletic," said Griffins head coach Chris Wandler. "There's a ton of upside to these two kids. Once they get into the gym and get a little stronger, you can see their game just elevating.

"That's what primarily attracted me to them from an athlete point of view – just the sheer upside."

Alyssa is a 5-foot-11 left side who will slot in behind a veteran group at the position currently with an eye on earning starts in the future. She won a Canada Cup in 2024 with Team Alberta U17.

"Alyssa has a ton of upside in her game," said Wandler. "She's a powerful attacker who can take over a match, and we're excited to help her develop at the next level."

Alyssa is coming in working hard to improve for the future.

"I think just the first year I'm going to try my best to learn from the older players, develop my skills a little more and work hard in practice, and focus on what I need to do to get to the next level in post-secondary," she said in a video about their signing created by the Lethbridge School Division in March.

After an official recruit visit to MacEwan in December, the sisters signed. They'll both be entering the Bachelor of Arts program next fall.
