EDMONTON – Women's soccer student-athlete Anneke Odinga is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after two points and a pair of strong defensive performances in the Griffins' six-point weekend in Winnipeg.

Odinga matched a program record with her second PK goal of the season during Saturday's 5-0 win over the Wesmen.

Men's soccer midfielder Jakob Sievert and women's hockey forward Kori Paterson were named the second and third stars, respectively.

All three are appearing for the first time in 2024-25.

Named player of the game after leading the Griffins to a dominant 5-0 win over Winnipeg on Sunday, the veteran defender continued to prove why she was named to the Canada West first all-star team the last two seasons.

Odinga scored the game-winner on a PK, tying a program record by becoming the fifth Griffins player in with two PK goals in a Canada West season.

She then added a dynamic assist on Brenna Paquin's 3-0 goal, darting up the middle of the field, drawing three defenders and dishing it off for the finish.

Odinga also had two strong defensive performances as the Griffins also beat Manitoba 3-1 on Saturday.

For the season, the Griffins' co-captain has two goals and three points in six games.

The team is back at home this weekend as they welcome Regina on Saturday (11 a.m.) and Saskatchewan on Sunday (12 p.m., both Edmonton Scottish, Canada West TV).

Logging back-to-back 90-minute performances for the Griffins in a pair of weekend home games, the veteran German midfielder set the tone for MacEwan with strong work rate all over the pitch.

Sievert brought a commendable level of compete and desire against UFV and Trinity Western, bringing the emotion and passion the squad needed.

His work in midfield led to many stats that aren't officially tracked as he broke up many opposition possessions and set up multiple opportunities for the Griffins all over the field.

Sievert will lead MacEwan into another weekend of home action vs. Saskatchewan on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) and Lethbridge on Sunday (2:30 p.m., both Edmonton Scottish, Canada West TV).

Both points came on the powerplay, and Paterson continued her special teams dominance by also proving to be key to the Griffins' penalty kill in both games. She also drove play at 5-on-5.

The Griffins will be back in preseason action again on Friday when they play against Team Alberta U18 in Red Deer (3 p.m.).
