EDMONTON – With over 60 players taking to the ice in back-to-back contests at the Downtown Community Arena on Dec. 7, the MacEwan Griffins Alumni Hockey Games were a resounding success.

The inaugural event also featured several alumni and families watching from the stands as former Griffins from both programs' storied histories going back to the late '90s were on hand to reunite with old teammates, have a little friendly competition and share old memories.

Players experienced nostalgic highlights such as personalized dressing rooms, the use of Griffins jerseys for game play, Griffins alumni t-shirts, alumni gift bags and commemorative programs

Their smiles and grins during the fun, competitive games told the story.

"Seeing the smiles on everyone's faces and the joy of teammates reconnecting is what makes events like the inaugural Griffins Alumni Hockey Games so special," said Michelle Stevenson, (Public Relations '00), Director Alumni. "It's not just about the game—it's about coming together to celebrate Griffin pride, rekindle friendships, and honour the legacy of our teams and university."

MacEwan University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Annette Trimbee was on hand to receive a special jersey from the Griffins prior to dropping the puck in a ceremonial faceoff after the women's game, won by Team Leeming.

"The day truly couldn't have gone better," said former Griffins goaltender Natalie Bender (Bachelor of Commerce '22) "It was so awesome to be re-connected with old teammates, coaches, and friends. You couldn't wipe the smile off people's faces, it was so well received and every had so much fun. Strapping on the equipment and re-living our time on the Griffs brought back some amazing memories and emotions. I look forward to doing it again next year! Thank you to Alumni, Athletics and everyone that had a hand in making this event come to life. We are so lucky."

The men's game followed with Team Benn taking the bragging rights.

The post-game reception at Towers welcomed 90 alumni, friends and family, fostering connections and enthusiasm to make this an annual event.

Event proceeds totalled $1,935 for the Adopt a Griffin program.
