EDMONTON – After becoming the first Griffins men's soccer player selected to a Canada West all-star team, Philip Masri has been named the Sandman Signature Downtown Edmonton Player of the Month, as the Griffins' top athlete in October across all sports.

Masri wins a free night's stay at the Sandman Signature Downtown Edmonton.

On Oct. 27 when Canada West released their all-star teams for the 2023 season, Masri was selected to both the second team and all-rookie team, becoming the first player in program history to make an all-star squad, and just the fourth – if you include fellow 2023 team member Kayden Dugas – to make the all-rookie team.

Masri collected three of his program record-tying eight points in October as he and the Griffins were alive in the playoff race until the final day of the regular season.

"He's very valuable and he's only going to become more valuable," said MacEwan head coach Adam Loga. "We've only scratched the surface. His improvement over the last two months has been tremendous.

"Most importantly, too, people are aware he's on the pitch. They always need to know where he is, which opens up space and channels and pockets for the others to create into."

His contributions to the Griffins' success extended beyond the field.

"I think his character and who he is as a teammate and person is contagious and it's definitely sparked the locker-room in a positive way," said Loga. "He brings a lot of positive energy and good vibes to the group and he's very likable.

"It's nice to see a player come in and be holistic – they're good in the classroom, they're good on the pitch, they're good people and good teammates."
