EDMONTON – Winning a national championship is an accomplishment to one day tell your grandkids about.

How about two of them in one season?

That's a feat that new MacEwan Griffins women's hockey recruit Brooklyn Schroeder can claim after helping Team Alberta strike gold at the Canada Winter Games and the St. Albert Slash claim the Esso Cup national Midget female AAA championship last season.

"We are really excited about the addition of Brooklyn for 2020-21," said Griffins head coach Lindsay McAlpine. "Brooklyn is a solid defensive forward, who brings immense work ethic, top hockey IQ, and championship experience.

"All Brooklyn's previous coaches speak very highly of the intangible character traits that are so important to the continued success of our program, and team culture."

With a wealth of players in the program who have been a part of MacEwan's run to three-straight Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships, the Griffins have thrived on high character players with winning traits.

Schroeder will continue that tradition as McAlpine's first 2020-21 recruit – the year the Griffins enter the Canada West conference.

"We are at an exciting crossroads at MacEwan, in terms of our shift to Canada West, and I look forward to seeing our current players rise to another level, as well as the calibre of players that we are bringing into the program," said McAlpine.

Schroeder, who had a goal and an assist for the Slash in seven Esso Cup games, will return to play for the St. Albert squad in 2019-20 before joining teammate Brianna Sank – a rookie at MacEwan this season – on the Griffins in a year's time.
