CALGARY – In the midst of a late-season surge that had seen them win three of their past four games before Saturday – including blanking the Calgary Dinos 3-0 on Friday in Edmonton – the Griffins were aiming to keep things rolling in Cowtown.

Nada.

They were a step behind the Calgary Dinos all evening and fell to a 5-1 defeat.

"They were just prepared to play compared to what we were," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming.

With the result, the Griffins fall to 5-18-3 in the Canada West standings, while the Dinos improve to 8-16-2.

Rebecca Clarke gave the Dinos a 1-0 lead in the first period as the home side outshot MacEwan 13-4.

By the time Calgary went up 3-0 after two on goals by Evelyn Lawrence and Josie McLeod, all MacEwan could do was chase.

"We had a little bit of a response in the third period, but at that point it was too little, too late," said Leeming. "It just wasn't one of our better efforts compared to the way we've been playing lately, so it was a little bit disappointing in that sense."

Emma Tait put Calgary up 4-0 midway through the third before Ali Macaulay finally got MacEwan on the board with 7:41 remaining.

Clarke added her second goal of the game and third point with 5:28 remaining to seal the final result.

Mikayla Christmann made 25 saves for the Griffins, while Amelia Awad stopped 15 for the Dinos.

The Griffins return home to complete the regular season vs. the Regina Cougars on Feb. 14-15.
