WINNIPEG, Man. – Allowing two goals against just 28 seconds apart led to a 4-1 loss for the MacEwan Griffins women's hockey team at the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night.

Bisons Julia Bird and Rachel Gottfried scored back-to-back in the first period to take the lead for good after Kori Paterson had opened the scoring for MacEwan just 1:09 into the game.

Ali Macaulay sent a slider off Emily Shippam's pad right to Paterson, who pounced on the loose puck and got the Griffins on the board.

The lead was short-lived for the Griffins, though, as Bird capitalized off a pass from Julia Bilous. Then, just 28 seconds later, with the Bisons swarming, Gottfried scored the game-winner on a rocket that went over goaltender Lindsey Johnson's left shoulder.

Norah Collins and Sadie Keller scored insurance markers for Manitoba in the second period.

"We didn't execute our game plan," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming. "Despite scoring the first goal, our approach was not one that allowed us to maintain any type of momentum through the first 40 minutes of the game."

Johnson finished with 23 saves in the loss as MacEwan falls to 1-3-1.

The Bisons improved to 2-2-0 and moved past the Griffins into third in the East Division standings.

"We need to find a way to compete consistently and with energy for the full 60 in order to give ourselves opportunities to find success and identify areas of growth in our game," said Leeming.

The teams will meet again on Saturday (2 p.m. MT, Canada West TV).
