EDMONTON – Fresh off an award-winning season at Olds College, Broncos captain Sydney Jack is transferring to join the MacEwan Griffins women's hockey team in 2024-25, head coach Chris Leeming announced Friday.
In her third year with the Broncos in 2023-24, Jack produced 14 points in 24 games, winning the team's Athlete of the Year and Impact Player of the Year honours. The Stettler, Alta. native was also selected as one of four Broncos recipients of the Nu2U Community Spirit Scholarship.
"Coming off of three seasons in a leadership role with the Broncos, and most recently as captain, Syd brings a level of maturity and leadership on and off the ice that will contribute to the overall strength of our team's dynamic, community engagement and cultural standards," said Leeming.
"I'm excited to have her join the team and contribute to continuing to build this program up."
Jack is the younger sister of Jesse Jack, who also transferred from Olds College to complete her post-secondary hockey career with the Griffins in 2023-24.
"Knowing them personally, Syd has begun to pave her own path," said Leeming. "She has leaned on some lessons for sure, but she's definitely found her own manner of adding value to a program and having a positive impact."
Over three seasons with the Broncos, Jack produced 13 goals and 29 points in 57 games after Leeming recruited her out of the Red Deer Chiefs program before he came to MacEwan in 2022. Now, he's recruited her again.
"When building a program, you want to bring in people you believe in and know that you can work with, and I know exactly what we're getting with her," said Leeming. "She brings a level of maturity and leadership that's going to add to the overall team dynamic and standard. That's just the type of kid she is – high character, hardworking, and selfless with a great team first attitude.
Jack has the ability to play centre or wing and brings a strong work ethic that makes her impactful in every zone.
"Sydney's style of play matches our identity well as she will help to bolster the work ethic and competitive elements of our lineup," said Leeming. "She will be a solid addition to our checking core, as well as the penalty kill, due to her ability to pressure opponents with her skating and physicality."
