EDMONTON – The list of former Edmonton Oil Kings joining the MacEwan University men's hockey team continues to grow.

Kobe Mohr is the third alumnus of the local major junior squad to sign on with the Griffins for the 2021-22 Canada West season, head coach Michael Ringrose announced Tuesday.

Although Mohr finished his WHL career with the Moose Jaw Warriors in 2019-20 and also suited up for the Kelowna Rockets, Kamloops Blazers and Drumheller Dragons, the talented winger played most of his junior hockey with the Oil Kings, logging 176 games from 2015-18.

The winger will join fellow EOK alums David Kope and Loeden Schaufler on a Griffins team that practices and plays at the Downtown Community Arena, just steps down the hall from the Oil Kings' home at Rogers Place.

"He's another guy we're expecting to come in and really take on some of those offensive minutes and be a leader for us up front in his first year with us," said Ringrose of Mohr, who recorded 35 goals and 102 points in 271 career WHL games. "We're pretty excited to get him signed.

"Speaking to the program, you look at guys like Kope and Mohr, these are guys who consistently scored at the Western Hockey League level and it's important for our program that we're becoming a destination where premier players from that league want to come."

Mohr brings championship experience to the Griffins, as he was a key part of a Lloydminster Heat U15AAA team that won the 2014 Alberta Major Bantam League title. With 63 points in 26 games and another 16 in 11 playoff matches, he was a first-round WHL bantam draft pick, going 20th overall to the Oil Kings.

Mohr was also part of Team Alberta which won the 2015 Canada Winter Games silver medal.

"He's a one-shot scorer, which is nice," said Ringrose. "He's had a ton of success.

"If you look at his Western Hockey League numbers, he scored 100 points at that level and was able to contribute offensively in every situation."

Mohr is transferring from Red Deer College where he spent the 2020-21 season as a member of the Kings.

He wrapped up his junior career in 2019-20 with the Drumheller Dragons of the AJHL, potting a tidy 39 points in 30 regular season games and another three in five playoff games. He'll be joining fellow Drumheller alum and friend Andrew Kartusch on the Griffins.
