EDMONTON – Women's basketball student-athlete Mackenzie Farmer is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after leading the Griffins to a weekend split against Calgary.
Farmer scored a game-high 26 points in the Griffins' thrilling 67-66 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday.
Mason Hunter (men's basketball) earned second star honours, while Zach Webb (men's hockey) was named third star.
It's the second appearance of the season on MacEwan's Three Stars list for both Farmer (second star on Dec. 7) and Hunter (third star on Oct. 12), while Webb appears for the first time in 2021-22.
1st STAR: Mackenzie Farmer, F, women's basketball
Sherwood Park, AB, fourth-year, Arts
Amazingly, Farmer scored a combined 39 points in two weekend road games for the Griffins, despite playing with a broken finger as MacEwan earned a weekend split with U SPORTS No. 9 Calgary.
In Friday's 50-46 loss, her first game back playing since suffering the injury, Farmer led the Griffins with 13 points, adding two rebounds and two steals.
In Saturday's 67-66 win over Calgary, Farmer drained a game-high 26 points, going 9-for-10 from the charity stripe, with three treys and a 7-for-15 mark from the field. She added three rebounds and an assist.
For the season, Farmer leads the Griffins in points per game (15.1 – 13th in Canada West), and rebounds per game (6.0 – T26th in CW).
She leads the Griffins into a rare Wednesday night home game this week as MacEwan hosts cross-town rival Alberta (7 p.m., David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).

2nd STAR: Mason Hunter, W, men's basketball
Ardrossan, AB, fourth-year, Commerce
In his second weekend back from a hand injury that kept him out most of the first semester, Hunter settled in and returned to his top form against U SPORTS No. 11 Calgary.
In Friday's 95-75 loss to the Dinos, Hunter led the Griffins with a game-high 27 points on a sizzling 11-for-22 mark from the field, adding three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
In Saturday's 90-64 defeat, Hunter scored 13 points – second-best on the Griffins – adding three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
For the season, Hunter is tied for the Griffins' scoring lead with 11.0 points per game.
He leads the Griffins into weekend home action vs. Lethbridge on Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m., both David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).
Zach Webb bears down on Mount Royal University goaltender Riley Morris in Saturday's game. He netted three assists in two games (Joel Kingston photo).
3rd STAR: Zach Webb, F, men's hockey
St. Albert, AB, second-year, Commerce
Webb had a strong weekend for the Griffins during a home weekend series vs. Mount Royal University, producing three assists.
The second-year forward formed a great combination with rookie David Kope in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Cougars as they accounted for both of MacEwan's goals.
Webb put a pass on Kope's tape twice in the contest – finding him for a second period goal on an odd-man rush and a third-period back door tap-in.
In Saturday's 9-3 loss to MRU, Kope was again one of the Griffins' top players, setting up Andrew Kartusch for the team's second goal of the game early in the second period.
Webb has two goals and nine points in 14 games for MacEwan this season, tied for second in team scoring.
He leads the Griffins into weekend home action vs. Saskatchewan on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m., both Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).
