EDMONTON – Men's volleyball student-athlete Jefferson Morrow is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after leading the Griffins in a pair of weekend road games at Mount Royal University.

Morrow led the Griffins with 23 kills in seven sets of action against the Cougars, giving them a chance each night, even though MacEwan lost both matches.

Women's volleyball student-athlete Sarah McGee earned second star honours, while men's volleyball middle Carsten Bergeron was named third star.

It's the first appearance of the season for all three on the MacEwan Three Stars list.

1st STAR: Jefferson Morrow, OH, men's volleyball

Wynnum, AUS, second-year, Arts

The second-year outside hitter had a solid weekend for the Griffins in a pair of losses at Mount Royal University.

In Friday's 3-1 defeat, Morrow produced 13 kills on a .229 hitting percentage, adding an ace and 11 digs, while accounting for 14.0 of the team's points in a tight match (25-16, 27-29, 25-23, 26-24) that could have gone either way.

In Saturday's 3-0 loss, Morrow led the Griffins with 10 kills on a .241 percentage, adding seven digs and two blocks, while accounting for a team-leading 11.5 points.

For the season, Morrow is second on the Griffins with 79 kills, first in digs (56), tied for second in service aces (4) and tied for third in blocks (11).

2nd STAR: Sarah McGee, MB, women's volleyball

Edmonton, AB, first-year, Arts

In a tough weekend where the Griffins were short-handed, McGee stepped up with a pair of solid performances against Mount Royal University, including playing out of position on Saturday.

The middle blocker was in her usual position in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Cougars and finished as team's co-leader in kills (4) on a .250 hitting percentage, adding one block.

On Saturday, though, she was shifted to the right side to cover an injury and still finished as the Griffins' leader with five kills, adding a co-match high four blocks.

For the season, McGee is second on the Griffins with 41 kills, is tied for second in aces (5) and leads the team in blocks (24).

McGee will lead the Griffins into home action vs. Calgary on Jan. 28-29.

Carsten Bergeron fared well in a tough assignment matching up against Canadian junior national team player Luis Lange of MRU (Robert Antoniuk photo).

3rd STAR: Carsten Bergeron, MB, men's volleyball

Clyde, AB, first-year, Science

Given the tough assignment of lining up across from national junior team member Luis Lange in a weekend series at Mount Royal University, Bergeron came through with two solid performances.

The first-year middle blocker was the bright spot for the Griffins in a 3-1 loss to the Cougars on Friday, producing seven kills on a .312 hitting percentage, along with two blocks and a dig.

In Saturday's 3-0 defeat, he again held his own with four kills (.333), two blocks and a dig.
