EDMONTON – Midfield excellence can be seen through both offensive and defensive lenses.

MacEwan Griffins women's soccer head coach Dean Cordeiro has stocked his stable full of players who add to both aspects of that equation.

On Tuesday, he announced another promising addition to the midfield position, Southwest United product Abbey Froese.

Froese enters the spectrum as a huge plus on the defensive side of the ball, but has all the tools to excel in the midfield.

"She's a former Alberta REX player as well," said Cordeiro. "I see a lot of promise in Abbey as a defensive midfielder. She's a strong ball winner and intelligent in her ability to read the play."

Froese recently moved to the Sherwood Park Phoenix club, training over the past year with fellow 2021 Griffins recruits Toni Gill, Jayda Mitchell and Alysha Willisko.

"If we want to close out a game and have more defensive-minded midfielders in there, she's definitely going to be someone who will fit that bill," said Cordeiro.

"She can cover a lot of ground, jump into the play and spray the ball around the park. She checks a lot of boxes for what we're looking for in the makeup of our midfield."
