EDMONTON – For the second time in her young university soccer career, Grace Mwasalla has been named Canada West women's soccer player of the week.

Mwasalla, who scored three goals in two games for the Griffins over the weekend, nets the program's first honour of the 2022 season.

Two Griffins earned the player of the week nod last season – Mwasalla on Oct. 26, 2021 and Samantha Gouveia on Nov. 23, 2021.

Mwasalla's most recent impact came during an important six-point weekend for the Griffins as she scored twice in their 3-0 win over UNBC on Saturday and netted the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph over Calgary on Sunday.

"She scored three important goals for us and has been in such great form," said head coach Dean Cordeiro. "She really rises to the occasion. For her to be able to score the game-winning goal on Sunday was a big moment. She's a big-time player in a big game stepping up.

"I'm proud of Grace and her accomplishments thus far. She's only getting started."

The second-year forward/midfielder who is the reigning MacEwan Female Rookie of the Year award winner and a member of the Canada West All-Rookie team last season, has four goals in six games so far for the Griffins in 2022.

"We've played her at a couple different spots throughout her career here, but we find she's the most impactful when we play her in an advanced role up the pitch when she can get on the end of those final balls and finish," said Cordeiro. "The hardest part of the game is to score goals and Grace has a unique ability to find the back of the net on the regular. It's great to see."
