EDMONTON – With a background in sports and a familiarity with MacEwan University as a longtime employee of Sport and Wellness, Greg Curran can draw on a strong base of attributes in his new role as the Griffins' Athletics Event Co-ordinator.

Director of Athletics Ken Schildroth announced the hiring of Curran on Wednesday.

"Greg is a great addition to our department," said Schildroth. "He brings a wealth of knowledge that will help us deliver a superior experience for our student-athletes."

Curran has worked since February 2012 in the MacEwan Sport and Wellness department, ensuring smooth operation of the multi-use facility and has gained a familiarity with Griffins Athletics that should serve him well in his new role.

"I've been here in Sport and Wellness for six years and have seen a lot of the overlap with Athletics, so I'm familiar with how the Griffins operate," he said. "I'm just excited to be a part of the department and what the future holds for MacEwan Athletics.

"Personally, I have a passion for sports, so I feel I can bring that to the position and adapt to the role quickly."

Curran primarily played hockey in his youth growing up in Fort McMurray, advancing to the Bantam AAA level, while also playing some volleyball and soccer.

After graduating with a degree in Nutrition and Food Science from the University of Alberta in 2011, Curran worked as a manager during the startup of The Rec Room in South Edmonton Common.

In 2017, he worked with a partner to start a catering company in Edmonton and is responsible for the day-to-day operations, including budgeting, labour management and ordering.

These are all skills that will help Curran in his new role, which involves planning and co-ordination of Griffins athletic events, hiring of student staff and a plethora of other duties that ensures the competition runs smoothly for MacEwan's 16 teams competing in both the Canada West and Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

"It's been exciting for six years meeting a lot of the athletes here and the staff," said Curran. "I just love the culture of it all, the excitement of the competition. With our numbers going up with the Griffins, it's exciting to be a part of that growth."
