EDMONTON – Men's hockey student-athlete Marc-Olivier Daigle is the MacEwan Athletics first star of the week after back-to-back shutouts against the Briercrest College Clippers.

With 51 saves over the span of two games, Daigle eclipsed his own school record for the longest shutout streak in program history.

Other athletes recognized this week include second star Raven Beazer of the women's hockey team and third star Hailey Cornelis of the women's volleyball team.

Daigle is making his third appearance of the season on the three stars list after being named third star twice previously (Oct. 16 and Nov. 27). Both Beazer and Cornelis are being honoured for the first time in 2018-19.

1st star: Marc-Olivier Daigle, G, men's hockey

Delson, QC, fourth-year, Commerce

Making a combined 51 saves over two games worth of work, Daigle led the Griffins to 4-0 and 5-0 wins over the Briercrest College Clippers over the weekend.

As a result, he eclipsed his own MacEwan record for the longest regular season shutout streak in program history, upping his old total of 143:27 to 156:15 – a mark that stretches back to MacEwan's last game before the break against NAIT.

On Friday, Daigle made 19 saves for his first shutout of the season, doing some of his best work in the first period as the Griffins shook off the rust in their first game back after the semester break.

On Saturday, he made 32 saves to seal a weekend sweep for the Griffins.

For the season, Daigle leads the ACAC with a 1.53 goals against average and .946 save percentage.

2nd star: Raven Beazer, F, women's hockey

Cardston, AB, fifth-year, Science

The veteran forward had five points in two games, pacing the Griffins to a weekend sweep of the Red Deer College Queens.

In Friday's 3-1 win in Red Deer, Beazer was in on every goal with Dominique Scheurer as they each recorded three assists on Carley Jewell's hat trick.

In Saturday's 3-2 victory, Beazer scored 55 seconds into the second period by driving wide on the defender and roofing it under the bar. She added an assist on Scheurer's game-winning power-play goal later in the frame.

For the season, her final one of university eligibility, Beazer has three goals and six assists in 16 games.

3rd star: Hailey Cornelis, OH, women's volleyball

Legal, AB, fourth-year, Arts

MacEwan's women's volleyball team had a huge result in Vancouver, earning a weekend split against perennial U SPORTS powerhouse UBC and Cornelis was a huge reason why.

Her contributions from the outside were key in MacEwan securing a 3-2 victory on Friday to open the weekend series. She led the Griffins with points at key times, finishing with nine kills, two aces, 13 digs, five blocks, accounting for a team-high 13.5 points.

In Saturday's 3-1 loss, Cornelis was again one of the Griffins' top performers with seven kills, seven digs, two blocks and 8.0 points.

The result moves the Griffins to 8-6 and keeps them very much alive for the program's first playoff berth since joining Canada West.

For the season, Cornelis is third on the Griffins in kills (100), second in digs (115), third in blocks (30) and third in points (126.5).
