EDMONTON – With a proven track record of offensive production, Kadyn Chabot is primed to provide exactly what the MacEwan Griffins men's hockey team needs.

The Spruce Grove Saints left winger, who recently led his team to the Alberta Junior Hockey League finals, is expected to add some punch to a Griffins squad that averaged 2.39 goals a game last season – last in Canada West.

"Scoring is something he'll bring for us," said MacEwan head coach Zack Dailey of the Lethbridge product, who will make his U SPORTS debut for the Griffins in 2023-24. "He will have an offensive role. As a team that scored the fewest goals (in Canada West), we're looking to upgrade in that department.

"He's got experience, he's a very smart player; I would guess the adjustment period will be a little bit less for him. He has Western (Hockey) League experience, knows how to score goals and can produce offensively."

Dealt from Drayton Valley to Spruce Grove at the 2023 AJHL trade deadline, Chabot amassed 63 points in 59 regular season games in 2022-23 – including 42 points for the Saints. He added another eight points in 15 playoff contests as Spruce Grove fell 4-1 in a best-of-seven AJHL final series to eventual national champion Brooks, with three of their four losses being by just one goal, two of those in overtime.

"Kadyn did everything asked of him for our team this season, he had an impressive junior hockey career and I'm glad Spruce Grove was his last stop," said Spruce Grove GM Rob Sklaruk in a release on the Saints website. " Chabot was instrumental in getting our team to the league finals. I am very proud of Kadyn and happy to see him continue his hockey career and obtain an education at MacEwan University."

A product of Lethbridge AAA hockey, Chabot was selected by Medicine Hat in the sixth round of the 2017 WHL draft and eventually cracked that league with the Vancouver Giants under his former Midget AAA coach Michael Dyck.

The 5-foot-9 forward played 23 games for the Giants over two seasons, but spent the bulk of his junior career in Drayton Valley, finishing with 87 goals and 187 points in 218 AJHL regular season games, while adding another 20 goals and 35 points in 40 playoff matches.

"He has a lot of playoff experience and a lot of success in the playoffs," noted Dailey. "He's played in meaningful, hard games that have a lot of pressure. That's kind of what we're looking for in our group.

"To get to playoffs, we're going to have to play a lot of games where we're under pressure. So, having him with a lot of playoff experience is going to help our group."
