EDMONTON – After finishing 13th in the conference in scoring, MacEwan's Mackenzie Farmer earned the first Canada West all-star nod of her career on Thursday.

Farmer was named to the CW third all-star team after averaging 15.0 points per game in 2021-22 – the highest average of her four-year career so far.

"I'm so happy for her," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "She came into this season pretty determined to want to come in and prove something. She put in a lot of work.

"Over the course of the year, Mackenzie's consistency from two years ago has really improved. She wants to be a great player in this league, she wants to be a leader on this team and she's certainly taken the right steps towards making both of those things happen."

It's the first all-star honour for a Griffins women's basketball player in five years – the first since Kendall Lydon was named to the third team in 2016-17.

Overall, it's the sixth time since MacEwan joined Canada West in 2014 that a player has earned an all-star team spot.

Besides her offensive production, Farmer also contributed across the board for MacEwan in 2021-22, leading the Griffins in blocks per game (0.5), tying for the team lead in rebounds (5.7), finishing second in steals (1.8) and fourth in assists (2.0).

"It's great to be recognized by other coaches in the conference or her accomplishments and it's very much deserved," said Adams. "She's had the opportunity and put in the work here over the four years she's been with the program. It's such a great thing to see all of that rewarded and recognized by the other coaches in the conference and I think a really good step for our program moving forward.

"That she's able to accomplish this, sets the stage for some of our other athletes moving forward as we continue to build and grow our program."
Farmer will lead the Griffins into the opening round of the Canada West playoff tournament on Friday in Calgary vs. UBC-Okanagan (1 p.m., Jack Simpson Gym, Canada West TV presented by Co-op).
