EDMONTON – Familiar with the MacEwan University facilities from her time in the Junior Griffins summer program, Samantha Hickey has committed to the Griffins women's basketball team for the 2023-24 Canada West season.

"I actually coached Samantha as part of our Junior Griffins program when she was in Grade 8," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "That was the first time I got to know her a little bit. I really liked her game and was excited to see where she might be in the future."

The 6-foot-1 Jasper Place forward first had to decide whether to pursue basketball or volleyball at the post-secondary level.

"She's a multi-sport athlete; she's a very good volleyball player and could have played post-secondary volleyball, as well," noted Adams. "But she decided she wanted to focus on basketball and we're really excited. She's a good athlete, she's long, she's mobile, she has a good scoring touch.

"Once she decided she was going to play basketball post-secondary, I think her game's really taken off. We're excited to continue working with her and see what she can do."

Hickey comes from a strong Rebels team that finished second in the province. Multiple Jasper Place players have since committed to various university programs.

"She played a great role for them and was a huge piece throughout their provincial championship run," said Adams.

Hickey will join former Rebels teammate Allie Spenrath on the Griffins.
