EDMONTON – Embodying the three pillars of a Griffins student-athlete – Athletics, Academics, and Community – Shannon Majeau set an example for all others to follow over her six-year career at MacEwan.

On Wednesday, she became the first in women's basketball program history to be honoured with the Canada West student-athlete community service award.

The Spruce Grove product is just the second Griffins student-athlete to win the prestigious conference honour – which recognizes both on and off court contributions – following Kristen Skrundz, who captured it for women's soccer in 2017-18.

Her on-court contributions are memorable; Majeau graduates from the Griffins women's basketball program third in MacEwan's Canada West regular season history in career minutes played (2,278), fifth in points (673), second in rebounds (428), fifth in blocks (21) and third in free throws (171).

"Shannon has been the picture of consistency," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "Shannon is steady and reliable. On court and off court, she has been a leader in this program from the day she stepped foot on campus. She has a calm, quiet demeanour, but when she speaks, people listen.

"On court, she has brough a consistency as a scorer, a rebounder, and a defender. We're really going to miss her."

Off the court, the team captain has been model student in the classroom, winning five U SPORTS Academic All Canadian awards (2017-22) and is on pace to become the first MacEwan student-athlete to ever win six.

She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Honours Psychology with a 4.0 (out of 4.0) GPA and a cumulative GPA of 3.89.

Majeau's impressive community service record also sets an example of what a Griffins student-athlete is all about. During the 2022-23 season, she served as president of the Griffins Athletics Student-Athlete Council, helping to organize on-campus initiatives such as Mental Health Week, Sexual Violence Prevention Awareness Week and Pride Week.

Throughout the year, Majeau also volunteered at other campus initiatives like Salvation Army's Santa's Workshop, Bell Let's Talk week and served as a student-athlete mentor with Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton.

In addition, she volunteers with Limitless Athletics, helping run volleyball and basketball skill camps.

"Our student-athletes continue to showcase why they are such great people," said MacEwan Director of Athletics Joel Mrak. "When they give back to their communities, they become champions in every sense of the word.

"Shannon is a great example of a young person getting involved volunteering to represent her team and school and has been an excellent role model across our campus and community. She is very deserving of this recognition and on behalf of Griffins Athletics extend a very big congratulations to Shannon."
