Eckford moves to Griffins' Athletics Event Coordinator position

EDMONTON – MacEwan University Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Shawn Eckford as the department's new Athletics Event Coordinator.

Eckford has served in the position of Marketing Consultant for Griffins Athletics since 2014 but will move across the office to take on the fresh challenges that the new position offers.

"It has been a pleasure to work with Griffins staff, coaches and student-athletes over the past three seasons," said Eckford.

"I'm excited to continue my contribution to the department in a new role, one which will allow me to work more directly with student staff and student athletes."

Eckford will start his new position with the Griffins on Aug. 24. He will be responsible for planning and co-ordinaton of Griffins game-day events, including managing student staff, scheduling and other logistics.

"In his time at MacEwan University, Shawn has demonstrated initiative and leadership with Griffins Athletics," said MacEwan Director of Athletics Schildroth. "I have utmost confidence that he will do a great job in his new role.

"We're excited about the smooth transition and consistency this hiring will bring to our game-day experience."

Eckford holds a Bachelor of Sport Management degree from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. He also has a Masters of Arts in Applied Health Sciences – Sport Management, also from Brock University. He has previously worked in various Athletics department roles for Niagara College and Brock University.

In previous event management experience at MacEwan, Eckford oversaw the 2014 ACAC golf championships, the 2016 Bell NBA All-Star Challenge and the Griffins' hockey home openers at the Downtown Community Arena last fall.

The 2017-18 seasons for MacEwan's 16 teams begin in earnest over the next few weeks, with the first home action set for Sept. 2 when men's soccer welcomes Saskatchewan (12 p.m., Jasper Place Bowl).
