MacEwan Athletics

EDMONTON – Elizabeth Stewart is MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after recording the lowest round in the history of the women's golf program on Sunday.

The fifth-year player shot a 74 to close out a two-shot victory for the women's individual title at the ACAC South Regional in Medicine Hat. Her two-round total of 157 (83-74) was also the lowest-ever by a Griffins women's player.

Other athletes recognized during the past week include second star Lahai Mansaray of the men's soccer team and third star Kristen Skrundz of the women's soccer team.

Stewart was previously the third star of the week on Sept. 19, while Mansaray has also cracked the list (first star on Sept. 5) this season. Skrundz is making her first appearance on the three stars list in 2017-18.

1ST STAR: Elizabeth Stewart, women's golf (Edmonton, fifth-year, Accounting/Strategic Measurement)

With a final round 74 at Medicine Hat's Desert Blume Golf Course on Sunday, Stewart captured the ACAC South Regional tournament by two shots. The 2-over-par round shattered the MacEwan women's golf record as the lowest in program history (by four shots). Her two-round total (83-74) of 157, which beat Red Deer College's Shaye Leidenius (79-80), was also the lowest in school history. In addition to the individual title on the weekend, Stewart led the MacEwan women's squad to the ACAC South Regional team title as they beat host Medicine Hat College by 16 shots. Stewart will lead the Griffins into the ACAC Championship this weekend, hosted by MacEwan at Edmonton's Red Tail Landing Golf Club.

2ND STAR: Lahai Mansaray, men's soccer (Edmonton, third-year, Science)

After being MacEwan's leading scorer for two years running, Mansaray constantly faces double teams from opponents. Against UFV on Sunday, he put on a dazzling display of footwork in the 26th minute that allowed him to find an opening between two Cascades defenders for a scintillating pass to Christian Hernandez, who one-timed it under the bar. Later in the contest, with MacEwan trailing 2-1, he sifted through traffic to pot the equalizer on a rebound off a Lewis McDowell header. For the season, Mansaray has four goals and an assist through eight games – tops on MacEwan and tied for eighth in Canada West. He leads the Griffins on the road this week as they visit Saskatchewan on Thursday and Lethbridge on Sunday.

3RD STAR: Kristen Skrundz, D, women's soccer (Edmonton, fifth-year, Nursing)

The veteran defender and captain of the Griffins women's soccer team led the squad with 11 intercepts and five defensive blocks in a pair of weekend losses against UFV (1-0) and Trinity Western (1-0). She was also a crucial player in moving the ball upfield. Skrundz is a big reason why the Griffins have allowed only four goals against this season – fourth-best in Canada West. She will be key again as MacEwan visits two of the top three highest-scoring teams in the conference – UBC (23 goals in seven games) and Victoria (13 goals in seven games) – this weekend.
