MacEwan Athletics

EDMONTON – Ryan Baskerville is MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after leading the Griffins men's hockey team to a pair of victories over the weekend.

His defining performance was on Saturday, when he scored two goals and added an assist to pace the Griffins to a 4-1 win over the Kings.

Other athletes recognized during the past week include second star Amanda Murray of the women's hockey team and third star Kristen Skrundz of the women's soccer team.

Baskerville and Murray are making their first appearances of the season on MacEwan Athletics' Three Stars list, while Skrundz makes the list for the third time in 2017-18 after having previously been named third star on Sept. 26 and first star on Oct. 10.

1ST STAR: Ryan Baskerville, F, men's hockey (Edmonton, AB, fourth-year, Arts)

With a four-point weekend (two goals, two assists), the veteran led the Griffins to two bounce-back wins over the Red Deer College Kings. After an assist in their 6-2 win at RDC on Friday, Baskerville was the best player on the ice in a 4-1 win on Saturday. He scored twice and added an assist, each goal earned the hard way – by crashing the crease. Both goals were off rebounds in tight and the assist came when he jammed at a puck that RDC goalie Troy Terry inadvertently put in his own net. For the season, Baskerville has five points in eight games and sits in a four-way tie for second in scoring on the Griffins.

2ND STAR: Amanda Murray, F, women's hockey (Edmonton, AB, first-year, Arts)

In a fantastic weekend performance for the women's hockey team where they outscored the SAIT Trojans 10-0 in a pair of wins, there are plenty of deserving candidates for the three stars. But the rookie stands out the most. She and linemates Jordyn Reimer and Beth Taylor were responsible for 40 per cent of MacEwan's offence on the weekend. Murray scored once on Friday and once on Saturday in 7-0 and 3-0 victories. For the season, she has four goals in seven games, putting her in the top-10 in ACAC scoring.

3RD STAR: Kristen Skrundz, D, women's soccer (Edmonton, AB, fifth-year, Nursing)

Playing the final weekend of her illustrious five-year Griffins soccer career at the Canada West Final Four, the defender was named MacEwan's player of the game in Saturday's 2-1 loss to UBC in the bronze-medal match. Skrundz played 90 minutes in both Friday's semifinal – a 1-0 loss to Victoria – and Saturday's contest. While, there she was feted with a conference major award – the student-athlete community service honour – and will move on in consideration for the award at the USPORTS level.
