EDMONTON – Women's soccer player Meagan Lemoine is MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week for her crucial offensive contributions during the squad's home-opening weekend.
Lemoine racked up two goals and three assists in leading the Griffins to a pair of wins, 3-0 over UBC-Okanagan and 7-2 over Thompson Rivers University.
Other athletes recognized during the past week include second star Aaron Boyle of cross-country and third star Josh Gorieu of the MacEwan golf team.
Lemoine has now cracked the three stars list in back-to-back weeks after being named third star on Sept. 5. Boyle and Gorieu are both appearing on the list for the first time this season.
1ST STAR: Meagan Lemoine, F, women's soccer (Edmonton, second-year, Open Studies)
After recording points in four of the Griffins' five preseason games, Lemoine picked right up where she left off in MacEwan's home-opening weekend, recording two goals and three assists. Against UBC-Okanagan in the season-opener last Friday night, she set up the Griffins' first goal by Brittany Costa before scoring one in the 59th minute when she beat the UBCO keeper to a loose ball and found the twine, a marker than helped MacEwan win 3-0. On Sunday against Thompson Rivers, Lemoine was even more dominant, taking seven of MacEwan's 29 shots in the contest. She scored in the 14th minute when she was sprung by Meghan Oram, waited for the keeper to challenge and chipped it into the low left corner. She also recorded two assists, including one off an electric 30-yard throw-in into the box from the sideline. Lemoine is now tied for top spot in the Canada West scoring race.
2ND STAR: Aaron Boyle, men's cross-country (Edmonton, first-year, Phys-Ed Transfer)
The freshman kicked off his post-secondary career with a bang at the first meet of the season on Saturday – the Concordia-hosted ACAC Grand Prix #1. Boyle finished strong in 10th place in the men's 8K race at Edmonton's Goldstick Park. His time of 31:27 was only bested by four ACAC runners. He also wasn't far off the time of unaffiliated winner Matt Travaglini (27:58). Coach Drew Carver was using the race as a trial for the program's newcomers and Boyle passed with flying colours. "Aaron Boyle performed unbelievably well for a first-time rookie," said Carver. "He stuck to the race plan and figures he could have even gone faster."
3RD STAR: Josh Gorieu, men's golf (Stony Plain, AB, fourth-year, Commerce)
As the veteran of the MacEwan men's golf team this year, Gorieu gutted out a round of 74 in the team's intra-squad match at a blustery Red Tail Landing Golf Club last Saturday to top the team. "Aside from the wind, he could have been a few shots lower – his game was really solid," said head coach Jodi Campbell. He led his squad of Zac Yurick (76), Justin Berget (77), Brandon Walterhouse (79), Elizabeth Stewart (83) and Rachel Wiebe (100) to victory over their teammates Noah Lubberding (76), Dakota Smith (78), Les Fisher (80), Dani Donnelly (93) and Hailey Turcotte (96). Gorieu, who was a CCAA All-Canadian last year after finishing as the runner-up at the ACAC Championship will lead the Griffins into the ACAC North Regional this weekend in Camrose.
