EDMONTON – Carley Jewell is the MacEwan Athletics first star of the week after leading the Griffins women's hockey team to a split in the opening weekend of the ACAC Championship.

Two hours after winning the ACAC's most outstanding player award for her excellent season in leading all defencemen in scoring, Jewell scored the winning goal in a 2-1 Game 1 victory over the Red Deer College Queens.

Other athletes recognized this week include second star Nikita Case of the indoor track team and third star Samuel Foster of the men's soccer team.

Jewell is making her second appearance of the season on the list, having previously been named second star on Feb. 13. Case is being honoured for the second time, as well, as she was third star on Feb. 6. Foster is making his first appearance of the season on the three stars list.

1st star: Carley Jewell, D, women's hockey

Winnipeg, MB, third-year, Science

Prior to Game 1 of the ACAC women's hockey championship, Jewell was celebrated as the most outstanding player in the league and as a First Team All-Conference star.

She led all ACAC defencemen in scoring with six goals and 20 points in 24 games – the third-most points by any player and the most by a Griffin.

Jewell then provided empirical evidence of her dominant play by scoring the game-winning goal for the Griffins in a 2-1 victory over the Red Deer College Queens.

The Griffins, who lost 4-0 in Game 2 on Saturday, will host the Queens in Game 3 of the best-of-five series on Thursday (7 p.m., Downtown Community Arena). Game 4 is set for Friday in Red Deer (7:30 p.m., Enmax Centrium), while Game 5, if necessary, is slated for Sunday (6 p.m., DCA).

2nd star: Nikita Case, indoor track

Sherwood Park, AB, second-year, Open Studies

Rounding into top form a week ahead of the 2018 ACAC Championship, Case broke her own record in the women's 300 metres during the Alberta Athletics indoor track championship at the Butterdome.

Her time of 41.46 seconds shaved a few one-hundredths off her record of 41.55 set at the 2017 ACAC Championship in Calgary. It was also good for second place at the event, only trailing Cassandre Collins of the YYC International track club, who finished in 40.77.

Case will lead the Griffins into the 2018 ACAC Championship at the Kinsmen Field House on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and Saturday (8:30 a.m.).

3rd star: Samuel Foster, D, men's soccer

Edmonton, AB, second-year, Commerce

Foster had a great performance in a 5-1 victory for the MacEwan Griffins men's soccer team in exhibition futsal action against The King's University last Friday.

With a goal and two assists, he led the charge offensively, while also working as a defensive pillar, helping to limit King's to few scoring chances.

Over the course of the Griffins' winter season, the team has focused on defensive principles, so conceding only once in a usually high-scoring game like futsal made the result even more satisfying.
